One of Waveland's oldest citizens, John William Shanks, age 84, passed away early Tuesday morning at his home on North High Street. Mr. Shanks was stricken two weeks ago with a cerebral hemorrhage and since that time his condition has been critical. Mr. Shanks was born in Shelby County, Kentucky Sept 14, 1858, the son of Harvey and Sydney Shanks. When he was a year old he came with his parents to Crawfordsville. After living there for four years, the family moved to Waveland and Mr. Shanks had resided for 79 years in the same house. On June 1, 1893, Mr. Shanks was married to Lydia Catherine Ragsdale and to this union were born 3 sons and two daughters. The family circle was broken with the death of the oldest daughter, Sydney Frances in Dec 1931 and again one year later in Dec 1932 when the wife was called by death. Mr. Shanks attended the Waveland Public School and Old Academy. He was a member of the Methodist Church and for many years served as secretary of the Waveland Lodge No. 217, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was a decorator and for years his work was a standard of excellence in this community. He was a fine gardener and last year did all the work in a large patch of ground. Immediately after moving to the new home his interests were to prepare a garden spot for next year and he was engaged in that work when the fatal illness seized him. Surviving are the daughter, Mrs. Hubert Smith of Hammonton, NJ; who was unable to come; 3 sons, Joseph Shanks of Darlington; John Shanks of Noblesville and Frank Shanks of Waveland; a brother Charles Shanks of Los Angeles; 8 grandchildren and one niece. Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church this afternoon with the Rev. CN McBrayer officiating. Interment was in Maple Ridge Cemetery. -- kbz
